An October wedding at The Vinoy gets the version of St. Petersburg that everyone hopes for and few dates deliver. Labif Filmhouse has filmed at the resort on the downtown waterfront.
The Vinoy opened on New Year's Eve in 1925 and has been the landmark on St. Petersburg's waterfront since. Its Grand Ballroom carries 20-foot ceilings, arched windows and a Dale Chihuly chandelier, and the waterfront lawn looks across Tampa Bay with the city skyline alongside.
How it actually films
October in St. Petersburg is the first month after the humidity breaks. Air clarity matters more on camera than people expect — a hazy August afternoon flattens contrast across a long lens, and a clear October one holds the skyline sharp behind a couple standing on the lawn. Same frame, different month, visibly different film.
The building itself is a two-part instrument: a ballroom that works after dark on its own light, and a lawn that only works while there is sky. Almost every Vinoy film is really two films, and the join between them is the thing worth planning.
What to protect in the timeline
- Lawn while the sky still has colour. After that the bay goes black and the skyline becomes the only subject.
- The pink façade from the lawn. It is the shot that says Vinoy and nothing else.
- A margin for the walk between lawn and ballroom. Short distance, long guest movement.
